| Fireworks Sales Permit and License Information
NOTE: The application period for Basic Business Licenses (BBL) to sell fireworks has ended. The DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs will no longer accept applications.
The Fourth of July and fireworks go hand-in-hand for many people. While beautiful to behold, fireworks can be very dangerous.
The District of Columbia regulates fireworks sales and two agencies have primary responsibility for making sure fireworks are sold and enjoyed in a safe and legal manner — the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) and DC Fire & Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS).
All businesses that store or sell fireworks — in a temporary or permanent structure — must have posted a valid Basic Business License and Certificate of Occupancy — both issued by DCRA. Businesses also need to have a posted firework permit and pass an inspection from the FEMS Fire Prevention Division.
DCRA accepts applications for business licenses for fireworks sales from June 15, 2008 through June 25, 2008. Any approved business licenses will be valid from June 20, 2008 through July 5, 2008. The application for 2008 has ended and DCRA will no longer accept applications.
DCRA strongly recommends reviewing the materials below to begin collecting the necessary approvals and required documentation process in order to help you or your business legally sell or store fireworks during the holiday season.
