Residential Inspections Information

It is the mission of the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) to ensure your building and your unit is healthy and safe. DCRA needs you, the tenant, to report your suspected housing violations. District of Columbia laws require your landlord to provide apartments that are in a safe, habitable and livable condition. The landlord has a duty to make all repairs necessary to make buildings and apartments habitable. DC law also requires landlords to maintain buildings and apartments according to many established standards.

Customer Notice: The DCRA Inspection Scheduling Unit is now available from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. If you feel you need an emergency inspection, please do not email, call (202) 442-9557or dial 311 immediately. The following information will help you get your issues resolved as quickly as possible.

How to Request A Residential Inspection Online
To request a residential inspection online please send an email to: DCRA Residential Inspection Scheduling UnitTo help DCRA respond to your request as quickly as possible, please include:
  • Name
  • Phone Number
  • Address and Unit Number (if applicable)
  • Brief Description of the Problem

If you feel you need an emergency inspection, please do not email, call (202) 442-9557or dial 311 immediately.

Once a request is received, a staff person will attempt to contact the requestor to schedule an inspection date. DCRA schedules inspections in response to requests involving an occupied housing unit. Because priority is given to serious conditions in occupied housing units, persons submitting requests regarding exterior conditions are not contacted prior to the inspection.

It is extremely important that upon submitting a complaint or request for inspection that you provide a telephone number where you may be reached during normal working hours.

Nuisance Abatement Fund

The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs has established policies and procedures for emergency and non-emergency nuisance
abatement corrective actions involving utilization of the Neighborhood Revitalization Fund and the Special Purpose Fund (established by DC Official Code § 42-3131 et seq). These funds assist DCRA in making repairs of violative housing or property maintenance conditions.

If you still have questions, please contact DCRA at (202) 442-9557 or visit dcra.dc.gov.
