Deck Guide

Deck GuideThe Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) has created a Deck Guide that will assist homeowners in designing your deck, obtaining a building permit and passing inspections. If all required documents are submitted and requirements have been met, the required permit can be issued, in most instances, within 1 business day in our Permit Center.

We are excited about the creation of this #SafeandSimpleDC tool that will assist District homeowners with their deck building project. The Deck Guide will be available online and in the permit center.

The Deck Guide provides a step-by-step process to acquire zoning approval required to obtain building permit application, building plan review, process free calculations, and inspection procedures for decks.

A deck is usually attached to a house and is considered an addition to a home.  A building permit is required to be issued prior to starting work.

The standards and details in this Guide will help you determine how large the footings, beams, joists, posts, and ledgers need to be; how to build lateral bracing, stairs, and railings; and how to fasten all of the pieces together. The Deck Guide does not take into account conditions which may affect your deck design such as drainage conditions, slope conditions, or decks supporting loads in excess of the standard uniform loads listed.
