(Washington, DC)- The Bowser Administration is reminding District residents about a fraud scam where individuals are misrepresenting themselves as Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) officials are contacting residents claiming they have won a lottery or lottery winnings, and convincing them to send money in order to “secure their winnings.” This is fraud. Do not give these individuals any money or any information about yourself or your finances, DCRA warns.
DCRA has recently received new complaints regarding these communications occurring via telephone calls that may appear to come from a District government telephone number; however, that is not the case, and DCRA is not involved in any lottery or sweepstakes.
“No legitimate lottery requires you to put money down in advance. If you are being asked to give money or other personal information, it is fraud,” said DCRA Director Ernest Chrappah. “Remember: never give money or financial information to anyone over the phone.”
If you receive such a phone call, hang up and immediately contact the local office of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) at 202-278-2000. You may also contact DCRA's Consumer Protection Unit, or call the Consumer Protection Hotline at 202-442-4400 and press “6” for Consumer Complaints.
