Agency launches a home improvement guide for seniors and new video to help customers avoid common permitting mistakes

Washington, D.C. – Fresh off the heels of February’s Safe & Simple launch, the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) announced today the release of a new set of improvements for March. New Safe & Simple initiatives include a ramp guide and a video to help customers navigate the agency’s permitting process.

DCRA’s new Ramp Guide provides step-by-step instructions to help homeowners, particularly seniors, and contractors prepare an application for an entry ramp. The guide offers instructions for navigating commonly challenging areas such as zoning requirements and relevant construction codes. Homeowners and contractors who follow the guide will, in most instances, be able to obtain a permit for a ramp in just one business day. DCRA plans to release additional how-to guides for basements and other common renovations later in 2017.

“We want the process to build safely to be simple, especially for our senior community” said DCRA Director Bolling. “I believe that the new guide will prove to be of great benefit to seniors who choose to age in place.”
DCRA also posted a video that will help customers navigate the permitting process. The “whiteboard style” video offers guidance on how to submit a complete set of plans and highlights how to avoid common application mistakes.
