The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs' (DCRA) Regulatory Investigations Section investigates complaints from District residents who suspect private trash haulers are operating beyond the times allowable by Trash Collection Noise Law, DC Law 17 259.
Trash collection by private haulers is prohibited between the hours of 9:00 pm and 7:00 am in residential, special purpose, or waterfront zones, or within 300 feet of any of these zones. These rules apply to only private trash collection companies and do not apply to Department of Public Works vehicles. If the DCRA finds the private trash hauler is operating outside the allowable hours, the company will be issued a Notice of Infraction for $1,017.00.
IMPORTANT: If you suspect a private trash hauler is operating beyond these guidelines, please contact DCRA immediately. Trash noise complaints must be submitted within seven (7) days of the alleged violation. Be sure to include any photo evidence/proof with your complaint if available. All complaints must be signed before any enforcement action will be accepted by the court.
