DCRA Divisions

DCRA protects the health, safety, economic interests and quality of life of residents, business, and visitors in the District of Columbia. The agency does this by issuing licenses and permits, conducting inspections, enforcing building, housing, and safety codes, regulating land use and development, and providing consumer education and advocacy services.

Business Licensing

The Business Licensing Division regulates business activity in  the District of Columbia by licensing business owners and operators according to the business activity conducted  for example, convenience stores, home improvement, residential rentals, and restaurants, )and location.

The Business License Center is located at 1100 4th Street, SW, 2nd floor intake counter, Washington, DC 20024. Hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm and Thursday from 9:30 am - 4:00 pm. Join the Business Licensing Center queue no later than 4:00 pm to ensure proper attention is given to your application(s) prior to the prompt closing of the Cashier's Office at 4:30 pm.

Consumer Protection Unit

Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) aggressively pursues businesses that try to   exploit District residents financially.  Residents and visitors of the District can get consumer protection information, research businesses, file a complaint, as well as find links to other helpful offices and information.

Corporations

DCRA's Corporations Division serves as the Office of Corporate Registrar for the District of Columbia. The Corporations Division registers all entities, domestic (DC) or foreign (non-District) that conduct business in the District of Columbia.

Enforcement Administration

Proactive Inspections

The Occupational and Professional Licensing Administration (OPLA) supports the District’s non-health occupational and professional boards, commissions, and programs. Residential Inspections

Small Business Resource Center (SBRC)

Surveyors

Special Events

The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs’ Special Events Division ensures public safety at special events occurring in the Nation’s Capital in cooperation with numerous federal and local government agencies. Vending

DC City Council passed vending regulations regarding the sale of goods and services exclusively from public space and for the immediate delivery upon purchase (such as food trucks, hot dog carts, sidewalk merchandise vendors, ice cream, etc.).
